UNICEF Zimbabwe has launched a data repository platform for data and statistics on child-focused indicators to strengthen evidence based, and data driven approach to programming, strategy formation and advocacy.
The repository, which is a first of its kind in Africa, is a result of accumulated data that was extracted from various national survey sources across a number of years, designed to consolidate different data sources into a single unified platform for easy access, analysis and reporting.
The repository will provide real-time provision of updated national and sub-national child statistics.
It consists of three main sections; a main landing page, a data explorer page, and a dashboard which allows a seamless experience by extracting essential insights and information that allows users to create a personalized experience.
“This data repository is a testament to the unwavering commitment, dedication, and expertise of our teams – from the UNICEF Zimbabwe country office to our headquarters and our partner ZIMSTAT.
This is the culmination of tireless efforts to harness the power of data to drive progress for children in Zimbabwe.
By consolidating our data assets, streamlining our data management processes, and fostering collaborations, we are unlocking an immense reservoir of knowledge that will take our work to new heights,” said UNICEF Representative, Dr. Tajudeen Oyewale.
The repository will serve a diverse range of stakeholders including, government ministries, UNICEF programme sections, Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZIMSTAT), independent researchers, academia, NGOs and students.
Through its user-friendly, comprehensive, and customizable platform, it will foster a more inclusive approach to data-driven decision making.
“In order for Government and stakeholders to take appropriate action to address challenges facing children, there is need to understand and monitor the existing situation through use of relevant and timely data.
Identification of emerging issues require timely and flexible production of indicators often in collaboration with strategic partners. ZIMSTAT, in collaboration with partners, continues to deliver statistics for monitoring social and economic developments,” said ZIMSTATs Director General, Mr. Taguma Mahonde.
The development of the repository adheres to industry best practices which include Stakeholder engagement for the repository’s continued use and growth; Scalable growth that keeps it dynamic and evolving; Expertise in visualization, and Security and Accessibility.
It will also extend beyond mere data consolidation to include enhanced efficiency by providing a more agile response; focused problem-solving to identify and address issues; and long-term preservation to ensure data accessibility for future analysis and reference.
As part of the next processes, UNICEF and ZimSTAT will put in place a governance mechanism to assure quality oversight, and upload more recent data, including data from national surveys and verified, reliable administrative data from stakeholders.
Additionally, we will be working on linking the repository to other websites and exploring the possibility of expanding map visualizations to the district level.
