Gender and Media Connect (GMC) has announced the launch of a dedicated Journalists’ Wellness Week aimed at promoting the mental, physical, and digital well-being of journalists across Zimbabwe.
The event, which will run from 2 to 7 December 2024, aligns with the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, and aims to provide critical support to media professionals working under challenging conditions.
Held under the theme “#RechargeandReconnect!”, the initiative seeks to be a respite for journalists, allowing them to rejuvenate, gain practical coping tools, and enhance resilience in the face of growing pressures within the media landscape.
GMC’s Director, Patience Zirima, emphasised that the initiative is a call to prioritise the health of journalists, who often navigate hostile environments and cover traumatic stories with minimal support.
“Journalists are often at the frontlines of information dissemination, yet their own well-being is rarely prioritised,” Zirima stated. “This initiative is a call to action to create a healthier, more supportive media landscape in Zimbabwe. By addressing mental health and fostering solidarity, we empower journalists to continue their critical work.”
The week-long event will feature a range of activities designed to address the multifaceted challenges faced by journalists, including online harassment, workplace stress, and economic pressures.
The program includes mindfulness and yoga sessions, a Digital Safety Clinic on managing cyber threats, and a Legal Support Workshop for journalists handling sensitive stories.
“Breaking the Silence” on Media Stress
GMC highlights the silent crisis of media mental health, pointing to the stressful conditions Zimbabwean journalists often work under.
Long hours, economic hardships, and the demands of covering complex and sometimes traumatic stories have compounded these challenges.
The Journalists’ Wellness Week aims to offer a space for healing, reflection, and professional support, with dedicated counselors available in Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo, and Gweru to provide free, confidential counseling and guidance.
In addition to wellness clinics and workshops, the week will conclude with a Walk and Run for Wellness festival, featuring group fitness challenges, inter-media soccer matches, and free health screenings.
GMC underscores the connection between journalists’ well-being and their ability to advocate for justice and gender equality, particularly within a media sector often marred by gendered violence, both online and offline.
The wellness initiative is a pivotal effort to ensure that journalists can continue their vital role in society, equipped with the necessary support and resources. For sponsorship opportunities or further information, GMC has invited interested parties to contact Nyarai Kampilipili or Clyde Dondo.
