A high-speed chase at South Africa’s northern border escalated into a shootout on Friday morning after armed suspects driving a stolen vehicle fled across the Limpopo River into Zimbabwe.

Police in Musina said the incident occurred at around 09:00 on 17 April 2026, involving members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

Authorities were responding to a tracking alert linked to a vehicle reported stolen in Krugersdorp in March.

The grey Toyota Prado was detected moving at high speed toward the western section of the Musina borderline, close to the river separating South Africa and Zimbabwe.

According to police, SAPS units initiated a pursuit and coordinated with SANDF members stationed along the border.

As officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the suspects allegedly opened fire.

“A shootout ensued between the suspects and law enforcement,” police said in a statement, adding that the suspects abandoned the vehicle during the exchange.

The occupants then fled on foot, crossing the river into Zimbabwe while continuing to fire at pursuing officers.

Zimbabwean authorities were alerted and conducted a follow-up search on their side of the border, but no arrests were made.

The stolen Toyota Prado, valued at approximately R700,000, was recovered at the scene and has since been seized for further investigation.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with cross-border coordination expected to continue as authorities track the suspects.

The incident underscores ongoing security challenges along the Musina border corridor, a known transit route for vehicle smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
